The definition of the practice of engineering in the Professional Engineers Act in Ontario explicitly includes reference to our responsibility to …safeguard life, property, economic interests, the public welfare and the environment in all acts that constitute engineering practice to serve the public interest. This creates an imperative for engineers to incorporate this responsibility into their practice

How can this responsibility and obligation be practically implemented. The answer is for engineers to think sustainably and incorporate sustainability principles into their practice. And to be ever mindful of the long-term impacts of their work and projects on society, the environment and the economy. This responsibility requires us to assume a leadership role while working closely with other professionals, practitioners, and the public to achieve sustainable engineering works.

This webinar will provide engineers with guidance on how to incorporate sustainability principles into their practice. The webinar will begin with an introduction and a review of sustainability practice guidelines as outlined in Engineers Canada National Guideline on Sustainable Development and Environmental Stewardship. This will be followed by examples of engineering leadership in sustainability presented by three senior engineers working in the mining, automotive manufacturing and public housing infrastructure sectors respectively.

After some concluding remarks there will be a Q&A/table topics session.
